the “Gharib School”, the dual purpose of life is summed up in “serving the people and seeking the pleasure of the Creator”
One spring day in the year 1288, in Mirza Mahmud Vazir Alley, located on Amir Kabir Street (formerly Barq), a boy came into existence and was greatly loved and favored by his father. After the Quran, they named him Muhammad. His father, Haj Mirza Ali Asghar Gharib, was a religious and well-known man among the prominent and trusted people of Gorkan and had a room in the spring. His mother, Fatima Khanum, was a pure, pious, cheerful and good-natured woman whose children benefited from her desirable qualities.
Mohammad Khan spent his primary school years at Sirous Elementary School and his secondary school years at Dar Al-Fonun. In 1927, he went to France with the first group of Iranian students to study medicine. He enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine and studied pediatrics under distinguished professors such as Dr. Garnet and Dr. Dumas, and studied internal medicine for six months. He passed the external exams in 1931, and two years later, in 1935, he passed the internship exam. He was the first Iranian to pass the internship exam in Paris and continued his studies in pediatrics.
In 1936, he went to Tehran to spend his vacation and visit his parents, and married Mrs. Zahra Gharib, the daughter of Professor Abdulazim Gharib, who was a relative. The wedding ceremony was held in the garden of his father’s house on Haj Sagha Bashi Street, and the wedding was held in Mirza Mahmoud Vazir Alley. Then, he returned to France with them. The result of this union was two daughters and two sons.
In 1937, he defended his doctoral thesis entitled “Respiratory Interruptions in Infants” and obtained a medical diploma from Paris with very good grades. Finally, in 1938, he returned to his homeland. He first served in the military hospital on Pahlavi Street.
From the very first years of his return to Iran, he established a clinic that was often adjacent to his house. From 1938 to 1946, he had two rooms in a rented house on the corner of Heshmat-al-Dowleh Street on Pahlavi Street for his office. From 1946 to 1952, his office was adjacent to their house on Kakh Street and included an office, an examination room, and a waiting room. His office was moved to a building on Niavaran Street in 1972.
In those years, Professor Charlene Aberlin, professor of pathology at Paris hospitals, was invited to Iran to establish a medical school. He examined the doctors’ documents and appointed professors for each chair. The pediatric chair was assigned to Dr. Gharib. At that time, in 1939, Razi Hospital on Shapour Street was established under a new system. In 1949, he appointed Dr. Gharib as the first professor of pediatrics with the position of associate professor.
Dr. Mohammad Gharib first started working at Razi Hospital and then at the children’s ward of Hezar Takhtkhavabi Hospital. In 1968, after the construction of the Children’s Medical Center, which was founded by him and the late Dr. Hassan Aheri, he continued his work at this center.
In 1955, with the help of a group of colleagues, he established the “Iranian Pediatricians Association”, which he chaired until 1974. The monthly meetings of the association were initially held at Nikokari Hospital (on Sepah Street). Later, the monthly meetings were moved to Khajeh Nouri Hospital and from 1968 with the opening of the Children’s Medical Center to that center. In these meetings, pediatricians consulted with each other by discussing their successes and problems in dealing with disease cases. New scientific materials were also presented and discussed. In 1319, he wrote the book “Children’s Diseases” and in 1335, he revised and reprinted it. Together with the late Dr. Hassan Ehri, he wrote a two-volume book called “Children’s Medical Problems”.
Due to his great efforts in advancing medical science, he received the “Legion d’Honneur” medal from the French government in 1954. The professor would place the student in front of the patient and his problems, make him think, reason, and speak, and then provide guidance.

Dr. Gharib was fond of tennis and used every opportunity to go mountain climbing. He praised the mountain for its greatness, and for years he would go to the mountain with a constant group of his friends, whom he called “the friends of the mountain.”
The doctor’s active and strong body was attacked by illness in 1960. Of course, before that, stones had been observed in his kidney. In July 1972, he underwent surgery for a cancerous tumor in his bladder. Finally, on the morning of the first of February 1974, at the age of 65, his eyes closed and his spirit, full of courage, left the dust of his body and rushed to the heavens. His glorious life came to an end and, according to his will, he was buried in his eternal home in the city of Qom next to his father’s tomb. His name is on the lips and his loyal colleagues honor his name.
