The simulated patient approach is widely recognized as one of the most reliable methods for evaluating healthcare services under real-world conditions.
The findings showed that more than 97% of pharmacists recommended acetaminophen or ibuprofen as appropriate first-line medications for managing fever and pain, reflecting a strong understanding of initial pharmacological treatment.
However, the study also identified important gaps in clinical practice. Only about 20% of pharmacists assessed the child’s pain severity, while fewer than 10% provided parents with non-pharmacological recommendations, such as encouraging adequate fluid intake, dressing the child in light clothing, or using lukewarm compresses.
Furthermore, only approximately 14% of pharmacists referred children with symptoms suggestive of acute otitis media for medical evaluation, highlighting the need for greater attention to warning signs and appropriate referral of children requiring physician assessment.
The researchers emphasized that effective management of fever in children extends beyond selecting the appropriate medication. Comprehensive clinical assessment, proper parental education, and timely referral when necessary are all essential components of safe, high-quality pediatric care.
According to the authors, these findings may serve as a basis for developing continuing education programs for community pharmacists and improving the quality of counseling services provided in pharmacies. Such initiatives could ultimately enhance child safety, improve the quality of pediatric care, and increase parents’ knowledge and confidence in the appropriate management of childhood fever and pain.
The full article is available in the Journal of Comprehensive Pediatrics:
https://brieflands.com/journals/jcp/articles/170245

According to the Public Relations Office of the Iranian Society of Pediatricians, a study published in the Journal of Comprehensive Pediatrics suggests that while community pharmacists perform well in selecting appropriate medications for managing fever and pain in children, improvements are needed in clinical assessment, parental education, and timely referral of pediatric patients to physicians.
