World Hypertension Day: The Need to Pay Attention to Blood Pressure in Children

A board member of the Iranian Pediatric Association, on the occasion of World Hypertension Day, emphasized the importance of monitoring and controlling blood pressure in children and adolescents.
Dr. Ali Faraji, a pediatric specialist, noted that many families assume high blood pressure occurs only in adults. However, children can also develop hypertension, and if left undetected or untreated, it may increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases later in life.
He added that high blood pressure in children is often asymptomatic and can only be detected through routine blood pressure measurements during regular medical examinations. Therefore, parents are encouraged to ensure that their children’s blood pressure is checked during periodic healthcare visits.
The board member of the Iranian Pediatric Association further highlighted the role of lifestyle factors in the development of hypertension, stating that physical inactivity, overweight and obesity, excessive consumption of salt and sugar, and frequent intake of processed foods are among the factors that can increase the risk of high blood pressure in children.
Dr. Faraji emphasized that regular physical activity, a healthy diet, increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, reduced salt intake, and weight management are among the most important measures for preventing elevated blood pressure in children.
In conclusion, he stated that raising awareness among parents, schools, and the wider community about the importance of prevention and early detection of hypertension in children will play a significant role in safeguarding the health of future generations.
