Iranian Society of Pediatricians Holds Symposium on the Diagnosis and Management of Hyperammonemia and Homocystinuria

The Iranian Society of Pediatricians hosted a scientific symposium entitled “Diagnosis and Management of Metabolic Disorders: Hyperammonemia and Homocystinuria,” bringing together leading pediatricians, pediatric endocrinologists, pediatric neurologists, neonatologists, and other healthcare professionals.
According to the Public Relations Office of the Iranian Society of Pediatricians, the symposium was held on Thursday, July 16, in both in-person and virtual formats, and participants were awarded five Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits.
The symposium aimed to enhance physicians’ knowledge of the diagnosis, treatment, and management of inherited metabolic disorders while introducing the latest scientific advances in this field. The event attracted considerable interest from pediatric specialists, pediatric endocrinologists, pediatric neurologists, neonatologists, and other healthcare professionals.
During the symposium, distinguished experts presented the latest scientific evidence and shared their clinical experience regarding various aspects of hyperammonemia and homocystinuria. Speakers emphasized the critical importance of early diagnosis, timely intervention, and continuous education for healthcare professionals and families to prevent the severe and irreversible complications associated with these disorders.
The scientific program covered a wide range of topics, including the pathophysiology and treatment of hyperammonemia, management of acute neonatal hyperammonemia, clinical manifestations and diagnostic approaches for homocystinuria, the pathophysiology of homocystinuria, treatment of urea cycle disorders, long-term management of homocystinuria, and emerging therapeutic strategies.
The speakers also highlighted the higher prevalence of inherited metabolic disorders in populations with a greater frequency of consanguineous marriages, underscoring the need to enhance physicians’ awareness, expand educational programs, promote early diagnosis, and improve access to modern therapeutic approaches.
In addition, participants reviewed and discussed the latest clinical guidelines, diagnostic methods, treatment protocols, and the experiences of specialized medical centers in the management of inherited metabolic disorders.
By organizing this symposium, the Iranian Society of Pediatricians reaffirmed its commitment to advancing continuing medical education, promoting specialized knowledge, and improving the quality of healthcare services provided to children affected by inherited metabolic diseases.
