A brief biography of Professor Dr. Seyyed Ahmad Siyedati

Dr. Seyyed Ahmad Siyedati was born in 1934 in a religious family in Sabzevar and completed his primary education in Sabzevar and high school in Mashhad. In 1953, he ranked fifth in the entrance exam to Tehran University and studied medicine. After six years, he succeeded in obtaining his doctorate with first place.Dr. Siyedati, who was a student of the late Professor Dr. Mohammad Gharib, was fascinated by the ethics, piety, and personality of Dr. Gharib, which made him interested in pediatrics, and as a result, he turned to this field and became a pediatrician in 1962. He first worked at Hezar Takhtkhava Hospital and then, from 1968, at the Children’s Medical Center in the infectious disease department, and students benefited from his lessons. In 1988, he was appointed head of the infectious disease department of the Children’s Medical Center.Dr. Siadati went to America in 1986 and at the University of Texas, he conducted virological research on measles and chickenpox under Professor Philip Brunel, and he devoted himself to learning various laboratory techniques.He developed a new method for detecting antibodies to the varicella-zoster virus.In a letter written by Professor Brunel describing him, Dr. Siadati’s hard work and interest were praised by him. He writes: Dr. Siadati has outstanding personality traits. He is one of the hardest working people I have ever known.Since 1988, he has been the secretary of the board of examiners and evaluations of the pediatric specialty and the pediatric infectious subspecialty, and has played an effective role in organizing specialized exams.
In 1988, Dr. Siadati received the degree of professor at the University of Tehran. With the cooperation of Dr. Marandi, the then Minister of Health, Treatment and Medical Education, he worked to establish 9 subspecialties in the field of pediatric diseases.In 1988, he received the maximum votes in the medical system elections and became a member of the board of directors and the Supreme Council of the Tehran Medical System, becoming a source of many services for doctors and people in the community.In the first years after the revolution, he was the director of Group 5 of Tehran Children’s Hospital in the Educational Research Complex of the Ministry of Health, and he did not let the scientific and educational process of these hospitals, which had suffered from a shortage due to the departure of professors abroad, be damaged. Professor Seyadati’s classes were always of interest to students, and students learned from Professor Feyz. In addition to teaching, he conducted 31 research studies in the field of pediatric infectious diseases and contributed to the writing and supervision of 65 medical articles and dissertations. This talented physician prepared and authored 18 medical books.

He attended 85 domestic and foreign congresses as a speaker and carried out many activities in the country’s prevention and health affairs, including the prevention of rheumatic fever by diagnosing and treating streptococcal sore throat throughout the country with the help of the Ministry of Health’s Research Deputy, tuberculosis diagnosis and vaccination in the Varamin region, the polio eradication program, and membership in committees to combat acute respiratory diseases, tuberculosis, and infectious diseases. For 14 years, he was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the chairman of the board of directors of the Iranian Pediatricians Association, a member of the Foreign Physicians Examination Committee, a member of the 5-member committee for the scientific review of medical graduates abroad, the Supreme Medical Council for sending them abroad, the Medical Group of the Supreme Planning Council, a member of the Pediatricians Retraining Training Group, and many other committees.His wife is a pediatrician and he is survived by two sons, both of whom are doctors.
Dr. Seyedati had a message for doctors: “Given that doctors have a special position and God has placed doctors in a different spiritual space that other groups do not, we must appreciate this and treat our patients well, not be tied to material things and think more about the health of our patients. We doctors must perform our duties as a means to an end,” and he did the same.
After a year of suffering from pancreatic cancer, Dr. Seyed Ahmad Seyedati passed away on January 18, 2008, at the age of 74, in a hospital in Dallas, USA. May his memory always be cherished.He is one of the enduring and successful figures of Iran, whose name will remain in the minds of Iranians forever.
